![]() ![]() Relative to other MOBAs where management of special-ability juice (magic points, in this case) is key, I also enjoy how often abilities are available for use in League. ![]() The absence of those “denial” tactics definitely takes a competitive aspect away from League, but it's one that's often frustrating. Unlike some other MOBAs, there's no way to attack your own minions to deprive your enemy the experience and gold, making it simpler to focus on other tasks, like getting last hits. In the opening minutes of a match, League's Champions distinguish themselves with lots of low-level area-of-effect abilities that make killing minions quick and easy. My Panda Annie skin, for example, changes the little pink-haired girl into a mini-geisha of sorts, and her ultimate ability calls down a panda version of her grizzly bear, Tibbers. They can be pricey, but each skin has tons of detail, and it’s impressive that most of them come with unique spell effects and animations. If you want to go a step further, you can buy cosmetic skins for every character. Since many players opt for a completely free experience, it’s exciting when the roster changes and pushes the community to try out fresh characters and new strategies. You can also unlock every Champion at a satisfying rate without spending a penny, which is not only fulfilling, but it sets League apart from the type of free-to-play game that deliberately makes it impractical to play at a competitive level for no cost. The Champion rotation is a nice way to try before you buy, and helped me to pace myself by learning just a few characters at a time. ![]() Yes, that adds up to a princely sum if you intend to buy every single character, but there’s no need to buy more than you intend to actually play. Though it doesn’t give everything away like Dota 2 does, it serves up a weekly rotating selection of 10 Champions for free, and you can purchase and play with any of the 117-character roster for a reasonable price of between two and eight dollars each. I can’t help but laugh every time the adorable Lulu says, "Yep! That tasted purple!"Īs free-to-play games go, League of Legends is a model of generosity. Plus, the quirky things they say and their flashy active abilities make the Champions memorable. Teemo’s passive Camouflage power, for example, is a great way to sneak up on unsuspecting enemies. They each have an innate passive ability that helps make them more dynamic without increasing the already-complex management of active abilities. It’s an extra strategic objective to target in the enemy base, and having one more building to take down often leads to exciting and game-ending team fights.įrom Ziggs, the bomb-loving little rat, to Jinx, the blue-pigtailed maniac, it’s electrifying to coordinate with your team to mow down your opponents and push lanes with League’s characterful and cartoony Champions. Inside each team's base also lies an Inhibitor which, if destroyed, causes the opposing team’s side to start spawning super minions. The choice between engaging the other team directly or attacking their resources allows for interesting strategies and depth beyond simply fighting until one Champion or turret is dead. I particularly love how the distinctive jungles on either side of the central river are filled with NPC monsters that give buffs to players who take a break from battle to go on the hunt – it’s a constant temptation to risk venturing into the other team’s territory to attempt to steal their buffs. Called Summoner's Rift, this map is brightly and colorfully designed, and it creates a distinct playstyle with the way its dense brush allows you to conceal yourself and surprise enemies. Like most MOBAs, League of Legends’ main attraction is its five-on-five matches on its staple three-lane map. ![]() ![]()

That’s extremely rare and praiseworthy, even if Gylt isn’t their best game. Its small cast of voice actors does a good job too, with real children seemingly in the starring roles and who, regardless, actually talk like children.Ĭollectively, Gylt feels like yet another intriguing one-off game from Tequila Works, who now has developed five games in 10 years without any sequels, while no two of their games even exist in the same genre. It carries the playful ghoulishness of Beetlejuice, never to be confused for something sinister, but mysterious and enchanting. The soundtrack is the pitch-perfect accompaniment to Gylt’s adolescent horror tale, and it was the first indication that I was not to expect an adult tone. If you like stuff like Coraline or ParaNorman, you’ll find GYLT is familiar visually as it is in its gameplay, but in this instance it feels more commendable. Tequila Works shows off in Gylt’s setting, with a neon-lit arcade and an eerie gymnasium standing out as two especially memorable areas that look fantastic and pack just the right amount of creepiness to complement the tone. Textures blur the line between photo-realism and cartoon while colors pop when they’re meant to, though it’s also a frequently dark game. Gylt’s best feature after its tone is its visual style, whose funhouse mirror proportionality is instantly reminiscent of most computer-generated movies from the past 25 years. Likening the game even more to an introductory-level horror, the roundabout traversal feels plucked right out of the genre greats – find a key to open a door which grants you an item to backtrack to a previous door inside of which you’ll find a chest with another item which allows you to move on to a combat area after which you find a bird-shaped crest that you can plug into a door you saw an hour ago. Sally spends most of her time crouched behind crates waiting for a nearby monster to look the other way for precisely the six seconds she needs to advance to the next shadow. At worst, it’s totally void of new ideas when it comes to how players actually interact with it. From its puzzles made alternatingly of wires and valves that need spinning to enemies whose patrols encompass only the same 20 feet of space on a loop, Gylt is at best a charmingly typical experience, like the kind of stealth-action puzzle-platformer mash-up movie tie-in we hardly see anymore. Gylt’s tone and world go a long way to make up for the game’s totally familiar gameplay experience. Its T rating by the ESRB comes mostly by way of some foul language scribbled on the walls of the town, but the horrors themselves feel more like Pixar After Dark than true survival-horror fare, and that’s totally fine, because it’s clearly the vision Tequila Works had for Gylt and it delivers on it with precision. Gylt is thematically dark, but never pushes the envelope too far. The central mystery is a fun one and captures the Laika-like spirit of the project perfectly. For six or seven gameplay hours, Sally will be one step behind her troubled cousin, desperate for answers. ![]() Her younger cousin Emily has been missing for a month, and the search for her drives Sally to dig deeper into the history of the town as well as her relationship with Emily. ![]() As the middle school-aged Sally, players find themselves in her home of Bethelwood, a once quaint mining town now playing host to brutish monsters of various shapes and sizes. Gylt is a horror game, but that’s not to say it’s likely to be a scary game. Platform(s): Google Stadia Baby’s first Silent Hill ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Because raster images are more readily available in various file formats, they’re more accessible and easy to view online. ![]() Since raster graphics are made up of square-shaped pixels, they’re best for displaying detailed photographs and subtle gradations in color. Learning to know when to use raster and when to use vector in specific applications is essential for every creative. Raster images are used in many situations, but they’re not the best for every instance. To view vector images exclusively, change the Image Type located under the search bar and select Vectors. Shutterstock‘s collection of images includes tons of vector images available for download, like fonts, patterns, and illustrations. pdf (Portable Document Format only when saved from vector programs) Vector files can be saved or edited in these formats: Vectors are ideal for large or small format prints, because rasterized designs will lose quality when resized. Both logos and icons require immense details and many size options, usually depending on their application.įor example, you might use a logo on something as small as a business card or something as large as a billboard. Vectors’ scalability make them ideal for design work consisting of logos and icons. Avoid raster-based programs, such as Adobe Photoshop, when incorporating vector elements that need to be scaled. Programs such as Adobe Illustrator or Sketch are best used to create and manipulate vector images. You must have access to vector-based programs in order to edit the native files. While a vector image file has many advantages, there are compatibility issues when shared. This comes in handy when there are restrictions to file sizes or image storage. Image via NataliaKo.Ī vector image’s formulaic makeup keeps file sizes to a minimum in comparison to its raster counterparts. Elements like fonts render the same way-when sized up or down, they retain their quality. They’re made of paths and curves dictated by mathematical formulas. These paths and curves are produced exclusively through design softwares designed for vectors, like Adobe Illustrator or Sketch.ĭue to their algorithmic makeup, vectors are infinitely scalable, and remain smooth and crisp even when sized up to massive dimensions.Įven when scaled to substantial proportions, this pattern below remains clean and exact. Vectors use a different approach to image renderings. Some files take up additional data and use higher resolutions, while others take up less storage, but tend to be lower in resolution and quality. While all of these display pixels, each file format has its own distinct display settings. Raster files are saved in various formats: Avoid using them to design logos and icons. To edit these images, you need access to raster-based programs like Adobe Photoshop or Shutterstock Editor. For design work, it’s best to use these programs for photography and imagery only. And, when these images are uploaded online, the end result is a raster image. When you take a picture with a phone or a camera, the image is recorded as pixel data. Raster images are used in photography and digital applications. Tip: You can quickly cut down file size by reducing the resolution to 72 PPI for online images. An illustration with higher DPI (dots per inch) or PPI (pixels per inch) will be larger in size and data, which can be worrisome when there are limits to image storage or restrictions on uploaded file sizes. Image via NataliaKo.ĭue to the abundance of pixels in a raster image, the file sizes can be substantial. As a rule of thumb, it’s best to only downsize a raster image to avoid heavy pixelation. Obvious pixels make an image look unprofessional and unsightly. This is a key indicator of a raster-based image. Notice how the edges of the tropical pattern below become pixelated and jagged when magnified. When you zoom in on an image, the pixels become more apparent while the details of the image become blurry. The more pixels in an image the higher the quality, and vice versa. These pixels contain bits of color and, when combined, they build images. If you surf the web, chances are you’ve seen a raster image. Raster, or bitmap, images consist of tiny squares called pixels. Do you use raster or vector images? Raster images are made up of pixels, while vector images are formed by mathematical curves and paths.īeing comfortable with the ins and outs of both formats and how they translate when exported is an essential skill for every designer. With so many images to choose from online, it can be overwhelming to determine which file formats to begin with. Do you know the difference between a raster and vector file? This quick overview will help you differentiate for an improved design workflow. ![]() |
